Graduate Programs

Overview

WSU's School of Education offers courses leading to a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Learning and Instructional Design for educators in teaching and other fields where education is an area of focus. Graduate certificates are also offered in Advanced Professional Teaching and Learning Skills (APTLS), Online Learning & Educational Technology (OLET) and Teaching Excellence and Leadership (TEAL). 

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), for individuals who are seeking an initial license, is offered through the Transition to Teaching (T2T)  program, which is a two-year licensure program that includes the option of completing additional credit hours to earn the MAT.

Advanced Professional Teaching and Learning Skills (Graduate Certificate)

The Graduate Certificate in Advanced Professional Teaching and Learning Skills is a 12-credit hour non-degree program designed specifically for teachers seeking to enhance their professional knowledge and skills in current educational practices. This program offers a flexible structure that comprises 2 required graduate courses (6 credits) and 6 credits of Professional Learning Courses (PLCs). This unique approach allows teachers to apply their ongoing professional development experiences toward a recognized graduate certificate while deepening their expertise in areas directly applicable to their classroom practice. The program aims to equip educators with the latest knowledge and skills in the best educational practice. It empowers them to innovate in their classrooms and take on leadership roles within their schools while continuing their vital work as classroom teachers.

Learning & Instructional Design (Masters)

The Master of Education in Learning and Instructional Design is ideal for education and professional development career advancement for those who are engaged in the K-12 teaching and workplace training of adult learners. It is a 30 credit hour program. The program is offered for students who meet the admission requirements and are seeking a graduate level degree in curriculum and instructional design leadership. The core curriculum consists of 15 credit hours of work in curriculum and instruction, 3 credit hours of thesis or non-thesis work and 12 credit hours of electives.

Online Learning & Educational Technology (Graduate Certificate)

The graduate certificate in OLET is designed for graduate students interested in developing expertise and skills in designing/teaching online courses, developing instructional multimedia, operating learning management systems, utilizing various technologies for educational contexts.

Teaching Excellence and Leadership (Graduate Certificate)

The Graduate Certificate in Teaching Excellence and Leadership program is designed for teachers who aim to advance their professional teaching knowledge and skills in line with current research and best practice in the field of education. The program allows these teachers to update their knowledge and skills beyond what they learned in their undergraduate teaching licensure program and current practice through a deep dive into various aspects of teaching and learning for today and the future. Also, this program is a 12-hour certificate program that can be used as an elective for completing the MEd LID degree program.

Transition to Teaching (Masters or Alternative Licensure)

The T2T program at WSU is a two-year alternative licensure program that combines graduate coursework (on-campus, hybrid and online) and full-time, paid teaching in an accredited school as the classroom teacher of record. The program is geared toward working professionals looking for a career change and more recent graduates wanting to teach. Teaching candidates fulfill teacher licensure requirements in the first 29 hours (two years). Those who wish to earn the Master's of Art in Teaching degree must complete an additional seven hours of research in the third year.
